Poole volunteers conducted a drill called 'veering' in a recent training session. Veering is when the lifeboat deploys an anchor then slowly lets line out to move backwards towards a casualty. This is generally done in rough conditions allowing the lifeboat to remain head-to-sea to avoid capsizing or getting washed back onto rocks or a beach. Teamwork in this drill is essential with one person working the line, one person dipping at the back for shallows and excellent communication from the helm
