When feet are in stirrups then there can be a tendency to turn toes out which twists ankle and knee (and can be painful) then as soon as you move your leg backwards (think canter aid) the heel lifts aswell making it easier to lose stirrup. What should happen is your thigh opens up from the saddle as your whole leg (not just lower part) rotates outwards. One person commented that they learnt with a quail egg between thighs and saddle - whilst wouldnt recommend this as could get quite messy 🙈 gre
