Join us for a short ‘Culture Story’ about the Canoe Journey and Landing of the Tlingit tribe of Southeast Alaska. From the shore, observe the biannual event to watch canoes come in after days of traveling through the channels of Southeast Alaska towards their destination, ‘canoe landing.’ This emulates the tradition of Tlingit people visiting other regional villages to share in potlatch gatherings, which are social times that facilitate an exchange of wealth in the forms of gifts, art and food.

Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to the kids from the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy dance group for performing at our Native American Heritage Month celebration. It was so wonderful to watch the children dressed in their regalia, singing in the Tlingit language. In this video, the kids are singing the Language Warrior's Chant. We’re also grateful to Wooshkindeinda.aat Lily Hope for reading her book “Celebration,” which tells the story of a young girl’s trip to Juneau for the biennial dance festival.
