On July 2nd 1982, 33 year old Larry Walters from San Pedro California grabbed his aluminum lawn chair and strapped 42 helium balloons to his lawn chair and lifted off. He reached an altitude of 16,000 feet. 2 commercial airliners reported seeing a man in a lawn chair with balloons. He began getting cold so he shot a couple of the balloons with a bb gun and started his descent. He ended up getting caught in some power lines in a Long Beach neighborhood. He was fined $1500
