I want to share an interesting case with you all. Maybe some of you have dealt with this with your own horses? I've seen this one other time in another performance bred colt that we had here. I was absolutely sickened yesterday to find my 3 yr old daughter of Sixes Pick, Olive, walking around like this in the pasture! I knew right away that it was an issue with her stifle and there was some swelling in the joint. I immediately put her on stall rest with banamine on board and called the vet! We h

Thanks for the comments! This is a locking stifle, also called upward fixation of the patella, or delayed patellar release. Did you know that horses can lock their hind legs in extension? When the hind leg is locked, they don't have to use muscular effort to keep the joints extended. This is how they can sleep standing up so that they are ready to run off if a predator approached them (they would be more vulnerable in the wild while laying down). It's all good until the lock engages at the wrong

This is a mare with a severe locking stifle we operated on recently. It is pretty obvious that she cannot bend the leg properly. Not all cases are this severe. In some horses the stifle will unlock for a few steps and then lock again. It can be pretty dangerous if you're riding a horse with this condition as they can fall when it locks.
