With the onset of spring, caterpillars of the Marsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) are waking up from the nest in which they spent the winter, to absorb the sun's increasingly warm rays. In the coming weeks the larvae will disperse into smaller groups before going their separate ways to pupate as early as April and emerging as adult butterflies in May.
