Authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1899, Southwest Texas State Normal School opened its doors in 1903. During the first century, the Legislature retained the regional designation in the name, but as its mission changed it became first Normal College, then successively Teachers College, College and University.

Dec 19, 2024 · Texas Gov. Joseph D. Sayers signed a bill in May 1899 approving the establishment of Southwest Texas State Normal School in San Marcos. As a “normal” school, its purpose was to train the future teachers of Texas.

On May 10, the Legislature creates the Southwest Texas Normal School in San Marcos. The school opened its doors to 303 students four years later. John W. Gates of New York City, one of the founders of Texaco, establishes Port Arthur Business College to train people for the petrochemical industry, then in its infancy.

The university was established in 1899 as the Southwest Texas State Normal School.

May 26, 2003 · Texas State University is the seventh name of the institution that began as Southwest Texas State Normal School. Name changes reflected the schools evolution from a school that granted only teaching certificates to a university that is classified as an emerging research institution.

Recent graduates and current students may notice that the Pedagogs refer to “Southwest Texas” and “SWT.” The school was founded in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School and had several name changes prior to becoming Texas State University in 2013.
