An Explanation of Flat ‘Types’ in the Original Barbican Estate
There were originally 2,014 flats in the Barbican Estate. In recent years, 69 new flats were created on the top three floors of Frobisher Crescent, and 74 flats have been created from converting the former YMCA Building in Fann Street, now Blake Tower.

Chamberlin Powell and Bon's initial (1955) plan for the Barbican included a step pyramid in the middle containing a swimming pool, squash courts, and an exhibition hall. By 1956 the step pyramid had morphed into a huge glass pyramid dwarfing much of the rest of the estate.

Type 1A Barbican Estate flat | BARBICAN LIVING
Type 1A is the main Barbican flat type found on the ‘A’ side of Cromwell and Lauderdale Towers in the Barbican Estate. Flats of this type have flat numbers ending in ‘1’. Type 1A has a living room, a dining room, a breakfast room, three bedrooms, (5/6 rooms) a kitchen, a utility room, a bathroom with WC, and a shower room with WC.
