Google Maps is heading in a new direction with artificial intelligence sitting in the passenger’s seat. Fueled by Google’s Gemini AI technology, the world’s most popular navigation app will become a more conversational companion as part of a redesign announced Wednesday.

Google is planning to ship two new models. One is Gemini 3, which is optimised for coding and regular use, and the second is Nano Banano 2 for generating realistic images.

Google’s Gemini AI is evolving into a true assistant, now integrating with Workspace apps like Gmail, Drive, and Docs for personalized deep research.

Users can now have conversations about their route or surrounding landmarks with Gemini while using Google Maps.

Robert Dunnette, director of product management for Google Search, said the tool uses Google’s advanced Gemini AI models and can “produce a fully cited, comprehensive response in just a few minutes.” It will also display a research plan so you can follow along and better understand the AI’s reasoning.
