Genealogists have discovered that Pope Leo XIV's maternal grandparents were of Haitian descent, making him the first Haitian Pope in history, adding a rich cultural layer to the papacy.

When Pope Leo XIV was announced as the new pope, Catholics in the United States and his hometown of Chicago celebrated having one of their own lead the church. After the announcement, there were hours of speculation in the city over which baseball team the new pope supported before his family confirmed he is White Sox loyal.

A special prayer was delivered at Holy Name Cathedral Sunday for Pope Leo XIV. The church held its first Sunday mass since the pope was elected on Thursday. Many who attended said they are praying for unity.
