The Boston Red Sox signed first baseman Nathaniel Lowe to a one-year contract Monday, two days after he was released by the Washington Nationals. To make room on the roster, the Red Sox placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-day injured list with a strained muscle on his left side.

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly finalizing a contract with former Washington Nationals slugger Nathaniel Lowe.

Boston is currently holding onto the second wild card seed at 67-56 and is 5.5 games back from the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. The Red Sox are more than capable of reaching the postseason, but adding a talented first baseman like Lowe could be the difference in making a deep run and facing an early exit.
