FAA flight cuts set to begin at Newark, JFK and LaGuardia airports among others nationwide
It is day 38 of the government shutdown and now airlines are cutting flights at airports including several in the Tri-State area, with Thanksgiving just weeks away.
Overall, United has canceled more than 100 flights each day, from Friday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 9, the airline's website showed. Of those, 34 United flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Friday were cut, with that number increasing to 38 Saturday.
A United Airlines flight preparing for takeoff on Tuesday morning returned to the gate due to a “potential mechanical issue,” the airline said. The 302 passengers and 11 crew members aboard the Boeing 777, which was scheduled to depart around 7 a.m., exited the plane.
United will be reducing flight schedules during the shutdown as the Federal Aviation Administration looks to maintain safety across the country as many of their workers remain in furlough.
The FAA released a directive requiring 40 airports to gradually scale back flights starting Friday, increasing to 10 percent by Friday, November 14.
