Around the Bay Area, San Francisco has the highest average price at $4.82 per gallon, followed by San Mateo County at $4.76. Alameda and Contra Costa counties are even at $4.67, with a gallon checking in at $4.62 in Santa Clara County, according to AAA.

Beginning Tuesday, California drivers will pay almost 2 cents more per gallon at gas stations across the state. The price of gas will increase from 59.6 cents to 61.2 cents as part of an annual adjustment for inflation. The gas tax, enacted in 2017, helps pay for road repairs.

In an unrelated action, California’s gasoline excise tax, which is adjusted annually, increased 1.6 cents per gallon on Tuesday. The tax is primarily used to pay for roads and highways.
