WASHINGTON — The US seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship after “blowing a hole” in its engine room when it tried to break past the Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump revealed Sunday.

Six decades after his actions in Vietnam earned him the Medal of Honor, retired Marine Col. Harvey C. Barnum Jr. witnessed the Navy commission a destroyer in his name.

Two Navy guided-missile destroyers entered the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, the first American warships to transit the strait since the U.S.-Israel offensive in Iran began on Feb. 28. USS Frank E. Peterson (DDG-121) and USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) are now in the Persian Gulf after transiting the strait as part of the U.

The U.S. Navy on Sunday fired on and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship as part of its blockade of Iran-linked vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has committed more than a dozen warships to the blockade of Iran's ports. The top general singled out the destroyers involved.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine highlighted the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers enforcing the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports during an update to the press on Thursday morning.

The U.S. Navy commissioned USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG-125) in spring 2026, adding the first operational Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to the fleet and marking a generational leap in the service’s radar and missile-defense technology.

The destroyers were beginning mine-clearing operations in the vital waterway, U.S. Central Command said Saturday.
