"It's alarming to see how easy investment scam ads — which have cost some consumers their life savings — can be created and disseminated on Meta platforms," said Bonta in a news release.
Andy Stone, a spokesman for Meta, said that addressing scams on its platforms requires collaboration between banks, governments, law enforcement and telecom companies.
The paper noted that Meta is "reluctant" to add friction to its ad-buying process and that the company "balks" at banning advertisers, even those with a history of conducting scams.
