Two suspects arrested in connection with the theft of France’s crown jewels from the Louvre museum have admitted involvement in the heist and have been remanded in custody, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.

From the theft of the Mona Lisa in 1911 to the French Crown Jewels heist this past weekend, the Parisian museum has seen some audacious crimes over the decades.

The president and director of the Louvre Museum has been summoned to appear before French lawmakers amid the ongoing investigation into the heist of priceless jewels.

The Louvre reopened to visitors on Wednesday, three days after thieves pulled off a spectacular jewel heist worth €88 million.

The only camera monitoring the exterior wall of the Louvre where they broke in was pointing away from the first-floor balcony that led to Gallery of Apollo housing the jewels, she said. "We failed these jewels," she said, adding that no-one was protected from "brutal criminals - not even the Louvre".
