The set of remains handed over to Israel on Tuesday were those of Itay Chen, the final remaining American Israeli hostage, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

Israel's military gave CBS News a rare look deep inside Gaza, where many questions still hang over the ruins of war and the future of 2 million Palestinians.

The few buildings still standing in this expanse of northern Gaza protrude from the earth like broken bones. Around them, what was once a dense, urban neighborhood has been blown up, knocked down or otherwise crushed into debris and dust.

The presence of the militants, who have killed three Israeli troops, is threatening to unravel the fragile cease-fire.

The body is now en route to the National Center of Foreign Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification, which could take days to complete.

An Israeli military official told Reuters Hamas violated the ceasefire with an attack against Israeli forces in an area under Israeli control.
