As a kid, hearing about ancient cities in faraway places always fascinated me. Well, finally I was standing on the edge of an ancient Roman city that was founded circa 300 B.C. There were guides av…Full review by Gareth C

I had expected to see one part of a Roman colonnade but instead it is a huge area with ruins for different types of buildings. We did a self guided tour and read the descriptions. We found it very in…Full review by DotsGirl2

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Morocco. The expansive grounds are remarkably preserved, and looking at the mosaics gave a great picture of the people who once lived there. (It would b…Full review by calgaryguy

The walk from the entrance to the first ruins you come to is not long, five to ten minutes as I recall. But a guided tour takes you deeper into the ancient city’s ruins, pausing at highlights, and eventually looping back to the entrance in about an hour’s time. Uneven surfaces are the biggest lookout iin terms of conditions during the walking tour.

You'll park in the parking lot that's located next to the gift shop and entry way. You'll walk down a stairway and the museum is right there. You'll be approached by a local guide (the one who brought you there is not allowed into the ruins) , agree on a price and he/she will lead you to the ruins, just a short walk really. The ruins cover a large area but you can see a lot in about 2 hours. The ruins are on a hill so while you are viewing the ruins you'll have nice vistas in any direction. There are a number of helpful placards at particular spots that explain what you are looking at. I've been there twice; the second time the museum was greatly improved. You can easily spend an hour perusing just the museum.

It's 90 Dh for a shared taxi to Volubilis one way so get a few people together and split the cost. Otherwise it's a 7 Dh bus ride from Meknes bus station to Mulay Idris and an hours walk from there. You could also pay 30 Dh for a shared taxi from Mulay Idris to Volubis one way again. Not sure how much for a driver to take you from Meknes to the site and stay for the return but taxis are often going around the area so catching one back is no problem.
