As a kid, hearing about ancient cities in faraway places always fascinated me. Well, finally I was standing on the edge of an ancient Roman city that was founded circa 300 B.C. There were guides av…Full review by Gareth C

I had expected to see one part of a Roman colonnade but instead it is a huge area with ruins for different types of buildings. We did a self guided tour and read the descriptions. We found it very in…Full review by DotsGirl2

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Morocco. The expansive grounds are remarkably preserved, and looking at the mosaics gave a great picture of the people who once lived there. (It would b…Full review by calgaryguy

Our tour guide handed us off to a local guide at Volubilis. There was no choice for our tour guide to do the tour. I don’t know for sure whether we had an option of doing the tour of Volubilis unescorted — my impression was that the local guide comes with the entry fee — but I would not recommend an unescorted visit in any event. The local guide, with his intimate knowledge of the site, greatly enhanced our experience, pointing out and explaining different aspects of the ruins and maximizing our time at Volubilis.

You'll park in the parking lot that's located next to the gift shop and entry way. You'll walk down a stairway and the museum is right there. You'll be approached by a local guide (the one who brought you there is not allowed into the ruins) , agree on a price and he/she will lead you to the ruins, just a short walk really. The ruins cover a large area but you can see a lot in about 2 hours. The ruins are on a hill so while you are viewing the ruins you'll have nice vistas in any direction. There are a number of helpful placards at particular spots that explain what you are looking at. I've been there twice; the second time the museum was greatly improved. You can easily spend an hour perusing just the museum.

We two arranged through our Ibis Meknes hotel for a driver and private Grand Taxi (an old large diesel Mercedes salon) for a whole day and it cost us 450 dirhams. We went to Volubilis and to the nearby town of Moulay Idriss. It was so easy and very very convenient. You can do it much cheaper if you are prepared to go to the grand taxi spot and share with locals. We were out from 9 am to 3pm. We did spend a lovely long time exploring the ruins, mosaics etc on our own without a guide. The wild flowers were also beautiful. May 2018
